The Revival of Ambrose West

Turning an old chapel into a music, wedding and event hall

If you’ve driven by the renovated church in West Asheville, you may be curious as to why the property got a cool new facelift. Upon the closing of the Altamont Theatre in 2017, a gap was left in the local venue scene. Recognizing an opportunity, the mother-daughter team of Nikki Woods and Donna Fox purchased and began remodeling the chapel and its neighboring building. Soon, Ambrose West was born and officially opened for business in February of 2018.

When one is looking to venture outside of Downtown Asheville, West Asheville offers a place to kick back and relax. Ambrose West gives its visitors a spot to chill while enjoying local talent and specialized events. Woods and Fox want to concentrate on catering to the local community as much as possible.

“We wanted a community venue. A place to come together to listen to music, celebrate a life event, or host a meeting of the minds, business or creative,” stated Woods. A former organizer and manager of special events and member services at a private country club, her love of Asheville eventually put her and her family on the path to opening the business together. “We are a family run business. My dad and brothers have even worked in various roles and we have a small team of really dedicated folks we appreciate like family!”

Even without taking into account that the venue used to be a church, Ambrose West does indeed feel like a sacred space when you step through its doors. With exposed beams, large windows with wooden shutters, beautiful lines, and intricate tile and woodwork that gives a rustic yet modern feel, the setting is elegant yet versatile enough to adapt to any event.

An adjoining courtyard with vintage string lights, and a second building with an open floor plan and large fireplace adds additional space for gatherings. The outdoor patio area also leaves room for local food trucks to cater. There is even a lounge in the lower level of the main building, complete with a bar and strategically placed so any noise there won’t interfere with performances. The chapel is where the main listening room is, remodeled in a way to make the most of acoustics. Comfortable seating offers room for 150.

While the initial goal was to be an event space, Ambrose West is not only used for a wide array of listening room experiences, but also weddings, rehearsal dinners, engagement parties, theater performances, birthdays, and even corporate events. It’s seen concerts ranging from classical to punk rock, and comedy events are forthcoming. Woods suggested that attendees arrive well before showtime to enjoy the lounge and to find the best seat.

Ambrose West is currently offering 10% off for any event booked from now until January 1st, 2020 if they mention Dig Local. Be sure to book your event early, and find more info on their Dig Local profile.
