Reuben Roadtrip

Do I eat a lot of Reubens? Yeah, I do. So, when I recently saw an insanely delicious looking post that Sand Hill Kitchen made about their Reuben on Dig Local, it prompted me to take a mini roadtrip way out to the corner of Sardis and Sand Hill roads in West Asheville just to try one.

And I was not disappointed! It was piping hot, crispy on the outside, melty on the inside, savory as can be and hella satisfying — everything a Reuben should be! Plus it came with house made chips, which were great. Bonus: No plastic chip bag!

Sand Hill Kitchen is one of the most surprising venues in Asheville, being located inside a brand new BP gas station of all places! If you haven’t been there yet, go try it, because this amazing little joint, owned and operated by Chef Jamie Wade, has exceeded all my own expectations, and won the hearts of everyone who’s ever eaten there.

Sand Hill Kitchen is relatively new to the scene. I visited Sand Hill for the first time last Spring, and since then, I have seen Chef Jamie and her crew win both the 2018 Battle of the Burger (Judge’s Choice) and the 2018 Fried Chicken Challenge.

And FYI, the fried chicken sandwich — and now the Reuben — are among the nominees for my own “Best of Asheville 2018” awards, called the Stoobie Awards, which will be announced throughout January of 2019.

I highly recommend Sand Hill Kitchen! Don’t let the location put you off. Inside the gas station you will find cigarettes, soda pop, lottery tickets, motor oil and some of the best dang food in town. Each dish is made with high-quality ingredients which are deftly prepped, cooked and presented by people who know how great food should taste.

Go see for yourselves, and keep an eye on Chef Jamie and Sand Hill Kitchen, because they are a force to be reckoned with in this town.
